The
Riverview Psychiatric Center in Augusta, Maine is a protective
and healing environment for the treatment of mental and emotional
disorders. "Landscape Diary" was designed with the intent
of providing a feeling of calmness and healing for the patients
eating together in the Dining Hall.
The design is an abstraction of natural forms and colors inspired by many visits to the State of Maine. The light, colors and shape of the hand-painted brushwork is intended to provide visual stimulation and engagement, without being aggressive or agitating.
The glass artwork in the Dining Hall is a 50-foot long abstract glass painting that is distributed over 12 lights set within the glass wall which faces the courtyard. "Landscape Diary" will be visible from the Dining Hall, and from the courtyard in the evening when the interior is illuminated. The hand of the artist is clearly evident in the work, and is designed to communicate to the patients the importance of human presence and connection to them as viewers.
The windows are made with hand-painted glass enamels that have been permanently fired onto the glass. "Landscape Diary" will always be responsive to the natural light, the seasons and the viewers.
This artwork was selected through a limited design competition managed by the Maine Arts Commission, and is owned by the Maine Department of Behavioral and Developmental Services. This project was completed in 2004
