"The
City on the River" is a multi-part artwork that is located
in eight sites in the new Courthouse, which is a renovation
of an old music hall. The natural environment of Maine is
the source for the design of the windows in all locations.
Specifically, the Maine state tree, the White Pine, as well
as the Pine Tassel, Maine's state flower, are utilized for
this purpose. The blues and greens are suggestive of the sky,
ocean and of the Androscoggin River. The pines of Maine, which
through logging contributed to the founding of the city of
Lewiston, are symbolized here. In addition, the patterns visible
throughout the design are evocative of the textile industry
which once flourished in Lewiston. This work was selected
in a limited design competition and is funded by the Maine
Arts Commission.
