"Light Garden" at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute is a glass artwork which is integrated throughout the Radiation Oncology and Nuclear Medicine clinics. A total of 28 sites are involved, with as many as 32 stained glass panels in each site. The major design challenge of this project was to make an inviting, patient-friendly environment in a sub-basement, devoid of natural light. Stained glass is positioned throughout the two clinics as "glowing windows of light." The glass provides a ubiquitous theme, from raised coves in elevator lobbies and waiting areas, to wayfinding markers at hallway corners, to sidelights at conference and procedure room doorways. The Linear Accelerator Room has vivid back-lit panels to draw the eye through the entry maze and divert the attention of patients in the high-tech machine. Glass inserts into partition screens around waiting areas create colorful patterns with a reflective glint, to engage waiting patients. Painterly, naturalistic imagery provide a human connection and environment for the viewer.
