For the state of Connecticut, the history of the Charter Oak (White Oak, Quercus Alba) is the symbol of spiritual strength and love of freedom. The client, Charter Oak State College, wanted this symbol incorporated into the windows without a literal representation. Surrounding the front entrance of the college, approximately 65 square feet of stained glass is set into aluminum frames. The colored glass is not opaque—it is translucent, with the glass filtering the light into the space. The artwork also has areas of clear glass to allow light to come through into the lobby, and be integrated with the clear glass doors and upper windows. "Images of the Charter Oak" is intended to work well at a distance, yet to offer the viewer much detail upon closer view. It will provide a warm and welcoming feeling to visitors and daily users of the building. This work was selected in a limited design competition and was funded by the Art in Public Places Program of the Connecticut Commission on the Arts.
